Beyond Data: Better Investigations Better Results
Venue: BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC
Beyond Data takes investigation and interpretation of site contamination to a new level, giving you an in-depth understanding of what really matters the use of a Conceptual Site. How many times have you wrestled with an environmental report that merely repackages a lab report with no understanding of the data no inclination that the lights are on or that anyone is at home? How can you expect to pick an effective remediation solution, let alone a cost-effective solution?
“Beyond Data” helps you get beyond the data and into the world of the conceptual site model (“CSM”). Learn to develop a CSM from the get-go. Use your CSM to develop focused investigations with meaningful conclusions. Gather the information needed for successful remediation. This highly interactive two-day workshop uses many real world examples and the latest concepts in adult learning to put you into the critical learning zone, gaining competency in the assessment and interpretation of environmental data, and in the communication of your findings. Working in small groups, you will draw stratigraphic cross-sections, post and contour data, examine fate and transport processes, think, hypothesize, test and write. Through strategically linked lecturettes, you will gain an understanding of current and innovative approaches to site investigation, risk management and cleanup.
Workshop Topics include:
- Importance of a Robust Conceptual Site Model

Understanding Environmental Site Investigations:
Contaminated Site Model and Robust Site Characterization
Environmental Site Investigations (ESIs) are the foundation of subsequent risk assessment and remediation. A poor ESI may lead to incorrect or incomplete characterization of site contamination. This can result in unnecessary or inappropriate remedial/risk management measures. Learn how to develop a sound contaminated site model and what makes an ESI robust.
This workshop takes interpretation of soil, groundwater and soil vapour data to the next level, giving you an in-depth understanding of what really matters for ESIs. Have you reviewed ESI reports and found that they missed the forest for the trees? You are not alone! Learn to sort the data and make sense of it before you carry on with remediation planning or risk assessment.
“Understanding ESIs” provides valuable insight for contaminated sites consultants, property managers and regulators. The workshop builds upon the Conceptual Site Model concepts from our companion workshop “Beyond Data” - helping you to find the “forest” among the “trees”, and giving you the tools to critically review and improve your site investigations.
Like our two companion workshops (“Beyond Data Better Investigations Better Results”); and “Contaminated Site Investigation Field Course”), this interactive two-day workshop uses real world examples and the latest concepts in adult learning to put you into the critical learning zone, gaining competency in the assessment and interpretation of environmental data, and in the communication of your findings. Working in small groups, you will create CSMs, critically review components of an ESI, examine fate and transport processes for soil vapour and groundwater, and communicate your findings.
The workshop includes five modules:
- Robust Conceptual Site Model and Site Investigation Approach
- Site investigation Planning and Process
- Groundwater Investigation and Interpretation
- Soil Vapour and indoor Air Quality
- Site Investigation Reporting and Planning for Remediation

Sediment Solutions:
Planning , Investigating and Assessing Risks at Contaminated Sediment Sites
The 3rd Annual Sediment Workshop provides made-in-BC solutions to contaminated sediment issues at both small and large waterfront sites. Local experts will discuss their experience with finding solutions to common issues under both provincial and federal requirements for planning, site investigation, risk assessment and risk-based remediation. The panel of experts will encourage peer discussions with ample opportunity to seek answers to questions that frequently arise when dealing with contaminated sediment. If you deal with waterfront property transfer, industrial water lot use, or historic water lot impacts, you can't afford to miss this event.
“Sediment Solutions” is aimed at consultants, property owners, and regulators, by providing a planning framework to focus the site investigation and risk assessment efforts on risk-based solutions. This highly interactive seminar uses many local examples to illustrate common issues and solutions under existing and new guidance and methods.
Sediment topics include:
- Strategy and Planning
- Sediment Investigation Approach and Methods
- Conceptual Site Model and Risk Assessment
- Common Risk-based Remediation Solution
This two-day event will present the latest in integrated approaches for cost-effective sediment assessment, management, and closure. Our panel of local and international experts will show you how to plan and implement sediment investigations, conduct sediment risk assessment, and find practical solutions to sediment remediation and management under both provincial and federal regulatory requirements. If you deal with waterfront property transfer, industrial water lot use, or historic water lot impacts, you can't afford to miss this event.

Risk Assessment Workshops
GeoEnviroLogic Professional Development is proud to announce a three day event entirely focused on contaminated site risk assessment. The combination of a two-day hands-on workshop for new and practicing risk assessors, and the 7th Annual Risk Symposium covering current and relevant topics captures the range of risk assessment skills and topics required for successful application to provincial and federal sites. The Workshop and Risk Symposium can be taken together or separately.
May 29 & 30, 2012
Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment: Fundamentals and Beyond
The workshop is tailored to the multidisciplinary team of risk and other contaminated site practitioners, site owners/managers, and regulators, to whom the knowledge and use of risk assessment is beneficial. For those who have not been involved with risk assessment projects and have not attended an introductory session on risk assessment, a “primer” will be provided for self-study in preparation for the workshop. This workshop takes risk assessment to a practical level, using examples and hands-on problem solving, giving you an understanding of the process, touching on where guidance ends and “best practice” takes over, and focusing on what really matters in terms of protection of health and the environment. The workshops are taught by senior contaminated site experts and risk assessors, and provide ample opportunity for participation through worked examples and group discussions.
May 31, 2012
7th Annual Risk Symposium:
A Professional Forum for Discussion on Current Risk Assessment Topics
As in previous years, this Symposium will address current, relevant and emerging topics in both human health and ecological risk assessment of contaminated sites. The Symposium attracts practicing risk assessors as well as other environmental professionals who are interested in the application of risk assessment at contaminated sites, and provides an opportunity to debate best practice and share ideas for addressing challenges that we face in our work. The Risk Symposium has been well attended and successful in the past. Don't miss this annual professional risk assessment event.
